Kars Province is located in the northeastern part of Turkey. It shares part of its border with the Repubic of Armenia. The provincial capital is the city of Kars. In ancient times, Kars was part of the province of Ararat in the Kingdom of Armenia. In 928, Kars became the capital of Armenia and although later in 968, the capital was moved to Ani, Kars remained the capital of the feudal principality of Vanand. During the Russo-Turkish War, the province of Kars was incorporated into the Russian Empire and remained so until 1918. Kars contains numerous monuments, the most notable being the ruined city of Ani and the 9th century Church of the Apostles.
