The old Armenian province of Kharpert is currently known as the eastern Turkish Province of Elazığ. It was a part of the Kingdom of Urartu at the period of it’s maximum extension. Kharpert means “Rocky fortress’’ in Armenian. The Kharpert castle was built by the first Armenian kings about five kilometers from the modern town to Elazig. Elazig now exports raisins, apricots and almonds to Europe and gold was found in the early 19th century.
