Basen is situated in the foothills of the Bazumi Ridge at 2,000 m above sea level. The village is in the eastern part of Shirak region, formerly known as Musayelyan, with a population of approximately 1,500. Basen is known for their unique Ashotsk cheese. Since its foundation in 1973, Ashotsk Cheese Factory is the largest producer of hard and brine cheeses in Armenia. Cultural assets of the village include St. Trdat church which was built in 1894 and a medieval graveyard.
